Vibrant peacocks, gold accents, tiny flowers, blades of grass, and the warm cream ground of classic Imari ware — this is one of the most decorative sake tokkuri in the collection, and one of the most immediately striking. Every inch of the surface is alive with detail.
This is part of the Japanese CBC Wares collection, produced in the Imari style — the bold, richly colored ceramic tradition that originated in the Arita region of Japan's Kyushu island in the 17th century and became one of the most widely collected and imitated ceramic styles in the world. The peacocks are rendered with characteristic Imari exuberance: full feathers, vibrant blues and greens, and gold throughout. A red band circles the lower body and the top opening is rimmed in gold. The crazing visible across the surface is entirely intentional — a deliberate design element of this style, not damage, and a hallmark of authentic Imari-influenced ceramics.
Two available — a lovely matched pair for gifting or display.
An excellent gift for a sake lover, a Japan ceramics collector, or anyone who appreciates the extraordinary decorative tradition of Imari ware. Beautiful on a bar, a bookshelf, or a display cabinet.
Imari ware takes its name from the port of Imari in Saga Prefecture, Japan, through which porcelain from the nearby Arita kilns was exported to Europe beginning in the 17th century. The style — characterized by underglaze blue, overglaze red, and lavish gold decoration — became enormously influential on European ceramics and remains one of the most recognizable and beloved Japanese ceramic traditions in the world.
